As promised, here are some photos of Alec’s nursery. We moved into our flat almost four months ago, and Alec’s room is finally coming together (although not completely finished). It’s all of our favourite room in the apartment, mostly because it’s where Alec spends most of his time, so we all spend a lot of time in here!
Alec’s room is on the darker side of our building, but his room opens up onto the balcony through a big door that lets in quite a bit of light. The walls are light grey but look a little blue in some lights. I’m not really all over blue for boys and pink for girls, but the color of the walls coupled with a few lovely accent pieces that Alec already had (an aqua-coloured cashmere baby blanket that my husband bought for Alec in India before we were even expecting, the cuddly bear/blanket from B. Braithwaite that he received from friends as a newborn), made light blue, light grey and white a good color scheme for the nursery. I’ve also read that blue is a calming color and promotes concentration in children.
It’s not a huge room, but definitely big enough. We love that we can get a lot of Alec’s stuffed animals, books and shoes(!) etc. out of the way thanks to the built-in shelves on both sides of the balcony door. By the windows, we have sheep skins that were a gift from a relative, and a big stuffed elephant. Alec loves to hang around on the sheep skins and watch the snow falling over the courtyard. The floor can get a little cold and we worry about the downstairs neighbors getting tired of all the banging around that goes on early in the morning, so we are happy to have a play mat for Alec to hang out on on the floor. It’s actually a Swoop Bag that we have tightened around an IKEA play mat with the “top” removed.
The crib we finally decided on is the Brio Sleep. We liked the versatility it offered as Alec grows, and I liked the look of it. I sewed Alec’s blue polka-dot bedding myself and there are also some pillows and a quilt from our favourite boutique in India, Good Earth. And of course, the Sleep Sheep and his friend the Polar Cuddle Cub.
It was really important to me to have a cozy space to used as a reading nook, for nursing (since I was still nursing Alec when he moved into this room), and just as an area to cuddle up together. In the end we decided to stay with the “big bed in the nursery” concept that we ended up with as a necessity in Atlanta, and I’m so glad we did. The ceilings are super high, which is lovely for the light, but not always so cozy-feeling, so we “lowered” the ceiling by putting up 20 fluffy poms liked clouds above the bed. It’s a queen bed and we have a ton of big pillows in cream and light grey fabrics along the walls. Alec loves to hang out on this bed and read stories and just cozy around. The bed has also come in handy on those nights when one of us has spent the night with Alec in his room.
There isn’t a proper closet in the nursery, so we keep Alec’s clothes in the antique teal cupboard that we bought in Cochin in India. I’m considering putting a rod into one of the built-in shelves behind the crib to store some of Alec’s cuter clothes out in the open before he gets too big.
